William H. Clegg, age 91 of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Ebeid Hospice. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School and attended the University of Toledo before entering the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947 with a B.S. Degree in Engineering. William served on active duty as Assistant Navigator of the Battleship U.S.S. Missouri (BB 63), Executive Officer of the Minesweeper U.S.S. Chatterer (AMS 40), instructor at the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. and instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. He completed the Senior Reserve Officer courses at the Naval War College in Newport, RI and the National War College in Washington, DC. Among his many Naval Reserve assignments were Commanding Officer of a U.S. Naval Reserve Surface Division, Chief Staff Officer of a Naval Reverse Group and group Commander of all Naval Reserve Units in Northwest Ohio. William retired as Captain, USNR after 30 years combined active duty and active Naval Reserve service. Bill completed the Rutgers University program in Industrial Management, and also graduated from the University of Toledo with MBA and Doctor of Education degrees. While in Graduate School, he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Kappa Delta Pi National Honorary Societies and was past member of Mensa. He was also a lifetime member of the National Eagle Scout Association. Bill was employed at Owens-Illinois, Inc. for 32 years, in a number of managerial positions in Engineering, Manufacturing, and Administration. After earning his Doctorate, he became a part-time Instructor at the University of Toledo for 3 years. Following retirement from Owens-Illinois, he became a full-time faculty member at the University of Toledo as a Professor in the College of Bus. Admin. Where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses for 19 years. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2000. Bill was a member of the Military Officer Association of America. He was a Life Member of both the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and the University of Toledo Alumni Association. During his career, Bill earned the designation of Certified Quality Engineer and Certified Project Manager. Captain Clegg was preceded in death by parents, Raymond and Margaret Clegg, beloved wife, Pauline R. Clegg, as well as his brothers, Raymond Edward Clegg and Richard P. Clegg. He is survived by his children, William K. Clegg M.D. (Denise) of Portage, Michigan and Kathleen A. Clegg M.D. (Mark Cheren Ed. D.) of Shaker Heights, Ohio. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Clegg (Mary Lulfs) of Metamora, Ohio and grandchildren, Kevin (Emily) Clegg, Paul Clegg, Alex (Meg) Campbell, Julie Campbell, Lucy Campbell, step-grandchildren Mindy (Elias) Melgar and Robert Cheren and great grandchildren, Calvin Clegg and Elizabeth Campbell and many nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends and family will happen at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home, 1163 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, June 14 at Gesu Roman Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd, Toledo, Ohio from 9:00 am until funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 am. Captain Clegg will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors at a later date. He will be remembered by those who knew him well and loved him as a beautiful man who lived a beautiful life.
