Virginia Koon

Virginia passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Sylvania Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio. She was born to Beatrice E. (Seely) and George E. Jewell on December 19, 1922. Virginia graduated from Scott High School in 1940. Her first job was with the J.W. Greene Music Co. in Toledo, Ohio. During WW II she was a civilian clerk for the U.S. Army Air Force in Detroit, Toledo, and Cleveland. Virginia met and married her husband 1st Lt. Edward W. Koon in 1944. After the war, she worked part-time in her mothers business, Jewells Sweet Shop, when her children were young. In the 1970s she worked as a secretary for 12 years for a company that sold lawn products. She belonged to an AARP Chapter #1336, for many years until it disbanded. As a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church (Ashland Church) for 28 years. Prior to that, she was a member of Judson Baptist Church for 20 years. Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward W. Koon, three brothers, Vincent, Norman and Robert Jewell. Also two sisters-in-laws, Jacquelyn Jewell and Betty Jane Jewell and nephew, Mark Jewell. Ginny is survived by her son, Lee (Pam) Koon, Rochester, N.Y., daughters, Sue Ellen Koon, Toledo, Ohio and Karen J. (Andrew) Bartmess, Cincinnati, Ohio, grandchildren, Daniel (Marybeth) Koon, Laura Koon, Rochester, N.Y., Bethany J. Bartmess, Katherine M. Bartmess Kate Cincinnati, Ohio great grandchildren, Benjamin Daniel Koon, Ethan Flynn Koon and Samuel Martin Koon, Rochester, N.Y., sister-in law ,Betty Jewell of Boothwyn, PA. along with 4 nephews and a niece. Visitation will be at H. H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Rd (at Alexis) 419-473-1301 on Monday, October 7, from 11:00 am until time of service beginning at 1:00 pm. Pastor Ed Sladek of Ashland Church, 2350 Starr Ave., Oregon, Ohio 43616 will be officiating. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorical contribution may be given to Ashland Church, American Heart Assoc. St Lukes Hospital or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
