Thomas Gonia, 81, passed away on October 2, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio, at St. Vincent Medical Center.
Born on September 16, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, Thomas was the son of the late Roy and Velma Gonia. He built his life in the community where he was born and later resided in Monclova, Ohio, with his beloved wife, Kathy.
Tom met and married Kathy, and they shared 48 years of marriage. Together they built a family that remained central to his life. He was the loving father of Kimberly (Ken), David (Sara), Michele (Massengill), Mike (Molly), and Robert (April). He was also remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Adam (Kaitlin), Cole, Luke, Nathan, Nicholas, the late Kevin, Thomas (Amber), Collin, Lauren, Alexa, Kyle (Cari), Tori (Evan), Kane, Austyn, and great-granddaughters Meeyah and Jocelyn, who are left to cherish his memory.
Tom graduated from Macomber High School in 1964. After graduation, he began working at Food Town as a bagger and later became a delivery driver with the 7 Up Bottling Company. In 1968, he joined the Toledo Police Department, where he worked in the inner city of Toledo for 25 years. His years of service formed an important part of his life’s work and reflected his longstanding connection to the city he called home.
After his retirement, Tom enjoyed spending time golfing and fishing, and boating on Lake Erie. He and Kathy later purchased a motor home and traveled throughout the United States, making the most of their years together and the opportunities retirement brought.
Above all, Tom was a husband and father. Those who knew him will remember the place he held in the lives of his family and the many memories shared across the years. His guiding hand on their shoulders will remain with them forever. A Gathering will be held on October 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Church on the hill 17700 Beaver St., Grand Rapids, Ohio. There will be a short service from 12 pm until 1 pm to honor his memory. After the service at 1 pm there will be a luncheon/gathering in the social room at the church.
