Shirley Mae Rooks

Shirley Mae Rooks, 81, of Toledo, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born in Bandana, NC and graduated from Rogers High School. Shirley married Robert “Bob” Rooks in March of 1963, and they had three children. After her children were grown, Shirley worked various jobs at Builders Square, Heartland Healthcare, and the Dollar Tree later in life. Shirley adored stuffed teddy bears and acquired many over the years. She was so proud of her family and enjoyed spending all the time she could with them. Shirley loved western movies and playing slot machines at the casinos. She treasured her annual month-long trips to Balsam Lake in Canada where she fished and spent time with her family. Shirley was the best mom, grandmother, and friend anyone could have. Her sense of humor and generosity will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her children, Brenda (Jeff) Dietrich, Sandy Polansky, Jerome Rooks; grandchildren, Michael, Rodney, Dustin; great grandchildren, Felecia, Andru, Halie, Savannah, Marissa, Dylan, Layla, Zachary, Calleigh, Rodney, Jr.; and great-great-grandchildren, Ricky, and Levi; brothers, Melvin Ellis, Chuck Ellis; best friend, Mary Anne Babiuch; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents; sisters, Jean and Linda; and brother, Robert.

Friends will be received on Thursday, June 29, 2023, from 2-8 p.m. at the Holland-Springfield Walker Funeral Home, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland, OH 43528, where the Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be made to the family in her memory.
