Russell A. Genung

Russell A. Genung, age 85, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away in his sleep, on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on May 25, 1927 in Temperance, Michigan to Russell and Opal Genung. Russ attended Liberty Corner Grade School and graduated from Whitmer High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy in WWII on the USS Ramapo. Russ enlisted when he was 17 years old and spent his 18th birthday in North Africa. Upon his return home he married the love of his life, Doris Spalding at St Clement Church on October 9, 1948. Along with his brother-in-law Windy Smith they started a custom kitchen cabinet company. After that he was employed at Short Way Lines, where he eventually became the co-owner with his partner Pat Rowe. When they sold the bus company, he joined Overland Travel as co-owner. Doris and Russ traveled the whole county. Their favorite trip was to Alaska. Russ and Doris retired in December of 1999. He was a life time member and past president of Great Northern Sportsmans Club. He also was a life member of Conn-Weissenberger American Legion and founder and member of Buck Lane Snowmobile Assoc. of Mancelona, Michigan. He loved fishing and mushroom hunting. Russ is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Opal (Stanley) Genung and brother, Richard Genung. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Doris Genung,; his devoted children, Rita (Lloyd) Sweebe, Bonnie (John) Niese and Russell (Donna) Genung, his grandchildren Marc, Kris, Josh, Holly and John and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation for Russell will be at H. H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Rd. (at Alexis) 419-473-1301 on Friday, March 29 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
