Robert John Best

Robert John Best, 93, of Fostoria, OH passed away peacefully on Monday, October 22, 2018. He was born on March 26, 1925 in Toledo, OH to Julius and Eleanor (Bremer) Best. At age 17 Robert joined the United States Navy during WWII. He served aboard the USS Sirona in Toyko Bay when peace was signed aboard the battleship Missouri by General MacArthur. After his military service Robert attended The University of Southern California and later The University of Toledo, where he earned his Masters Degree in Education. Robert was employed for many years with TPS at East Side Central and East Toledo Junior High School. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed fishing, bowling and woodworking. He also looked forward to spending every summer at the family cottage in Blind River, Ontario. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Donna J. Best; sons, Bob (Heidi) Best, Tim (Sara) Best and Mike (Libby) Best; grandchildren, Alec, Nick, Noah, Maggie, Hannah and Griffin; sister, Dorothy Czaja; step children, Gary, Doug and John Reiter and Pam Shumaker; and 13 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Blanchard) Best; sisters, Ginny Nadrasik, Betty Tigges and Donna Best. Friends will be received on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Blanchard Strabler Funeral Home, 1163 W. Sylvania Ave 43612 (419-269-1111). Visitation will continue on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 in Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd, Toledo, OH 43607 until the time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
