Richard J. Walter, 90, of Walbridge, passed away on March 1, 2026, at St. Charles Hospital in Oregon, Ohio. Richard was born on June 26, 1935, in Metamora, Michigan, to James and Norine Walter.
A 1953 graduate of Genoa High School, Richard worked as an engineer for Textileather in Toledo for 42 years. He also served in the Ohio National Guard from 1953 to 1961, earning the rank of Sergeant.
Richard married Elizabeth May on November 3, 1956, in Toledo. Together they raised five children: Mary, David, Ruth, Sharon, and Brittany. Richard was best known for his gardening; he was most often found in his lawn chair near the garden, iced tea in hand in his favorite Detroit Tigers cup.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; his daughters, Mary Sager, Ruth (Matt) Brown, Sharon (Mike) Ziska, and Brittany (John) Simpkins; and his sister, Norma Kirk. He is also survived by several grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Ella Harder; his son, David Walter; and his grandson, Andrew Sager.
Visitation will be Friday, March 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Robert Shank, Sr. Chapel at Sunrise Cremations and Funerals in Walbridge. Services will be held Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Lake Township Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Red Willow Event Center at 1 p.m.
