Richard Owen Butler

Richard Owen Butler, age 73, of West Toledo, passed away peacefully at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital, Wednesday, September 6, 2023. He was born August 8, 1950, to Frank & June (Noble) Butler in Toledo. Rick was a 1969 graduate of Central Catholic High School where he excelled at football and received All City Honors. After high school, Rick attended two years of college while serving in the United States Navy from 1969 through 1975; stationed in Mayport. While in the Navy, he served as a boatswains mate, cook, and baker aboard the USS Sarsfield. In 1972, he married the love of his life, Julie (Haas) Butler, his wife of 51 years. Rick was a licensed general contractor and a small business owner for over 30 years until he retired. Rick had many passions in life. He was famously known for baking pies and cooking for all he knew. He enjoyed coaching his kids for their sporting events that included football, softball, and baseball. In addition, he made routine trips to parks (metro and State), the Toledo Zoo, and Lake Erie with his family imprinting the beauty of nature. Furthermore, Rick had a servants heart and volunteered his time at Blessed Sacrament, Cherry Street Mission, St. Pauls Community Center, and Habitat for Humanity. Most importantly, Rick loved his people known as his family. He enjoyed spending time with family, attending his grandchildrens events, watching college football and the Detroit Tigers, and was an avid local high school football fan.Left to cherish Ricks memory are his wife of 51 years, Julie (Haas) Butler; children, Theresa (Mark) Hughes, Richard (Jose Delgado) Butler, and Andrew (Jacqueline) Butler; grandchildren, Keeley, Mark, II, & Allie Hughes; Isaac & Owen Butler; Ricardo & Mia Delgado-Butler; sisters, Brenda (Robert) Gray, Cindy (Michael) Pohorecki, Kim (Matthew) Hephner; brother, Frank (Julie) Butler; sister in law, Jennifer Kurucz; brother in law, William (Joni) Haas; sister in law, Jill (Craig) Manzagol; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death are his parents, Frank & June Butler, and brother, Michael Butler.The family will receive guests on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, from 2:00 pm 8:00 pm at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Toledo, Ohio 43613. Funeral Mass will begin Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 11:00 am at The Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2240 Castlewood Toledo, Ohio 43613. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cherry Street Mission. In addition, the family would like to thank all the caregivers at the Merit House Senior Community.
