While in Junior Achievement in which he served as an advisor, Mike met and fell in love with Julie, a long-haired girl in the orange dress and white tennis shoes. When she wrote him letters while he was overseas and sent him samples of canoe cologne and sticks of gum, it was then he knew that she was the one that he wanted to go through time with.
At every wedding reception Mike and Julie attended, Julie would be off chatting and the moment the anniversary dance started he sought her out no matter where she was so he could whisk her onto the dance floor and dance as many around them took a seat and they remained. Mike would smile with pride as he spent 57 years married to his best friend and the love of his life.
Mike was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus for the River East Mother Theresa council # 14344. He was honored as Teacher of the Year at Findlay High School. His travels while serving in the US Navy took him to various countries including Turkey (Istanbul), Cuba, Jamaica, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Malta, and Vatican City.
Mike loved going to church. He could be seen nearly every week in a pew giving thanks and praise to God for the gifts that he has been given.
Mike had a zest for life and enjoyed simple pleasures such as gardening, woodworking, brewing his own beer, and fishing. He was a dedicated family man who always put his loved ones first. From playing with his daughters as they grew up to being a supportive presence in the day-to-day lives of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Mike was always his family’s biggest cheerleader and he always showed up with a smile and a kind word.
Mike brought fun to the lives of his family with games, magic tricks, teaching them to garden, boating on the lake in a boat that was taking on water, sledding on cardboard boxes down grassy hills, fishing trips, watching the Superbowl and forgetting to go back to live TV after hitting pause or rewind, attending county fairs, camping trips, weekend getaways, pillow tackle, feeding french fries to the seagulls, and clapping with pride at every school and sporting event that his grandkids and great grandkids participated in.
His legacy lives on through the memories and values he instilled in his family. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
