Mary Kowalski-Evilsizer

December 28, 1948 — January 3, 2025

Mary Jane Kowalski Evilsizer, nurse and active church member, passed away on January 3rd at the age of 76 peacefully in her sleep.


Mary was born in Detroit Michigan on December 28th, 1948 to John and Betty Clark. Adopted by Anthony and Lois Jean Kowalski in Monroe County, Michigan. Mary was separated from her brothers James and Tom Clark in childhood. She missed her brothers dearly her entire life and never stopped searching for them.


Mary graduated from Bedford High School in 1968, she attend Northwestern practical Nurse School, graduating as an LPN in 1969. She worked at a number of hospitals in the Toledo area as well as Kingwood and Philippi West Virginia. The majority of her 30+ years career in nursing was spent at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe, MI, retiring in 2011. Mary saved countless lives and was beloved by her coworkers and patients.


Mary was preceded in death by her husband Richard Merle Evilsizer. She is survived by her sons Michael Evilsizer and Christopher Evilsizer and her step son Richard Evilsizer. Mary had 10 grandchildren: Colleen Heavner, Bevan Evilsizer, Erin Evilsizer, Isabella Evilsizer, and Olivia Evilsizer, Tylor Roosinck, Kirsten Evilsizer, Clea Evilsizer, Autumn Evilsizer and countless honorary grandchildren. She raised several generations of her family in the home she cherished.


Mary was an avid gardener and strived to create the perfect English garden in her yard. She was a student of history and maintained an extensive library of classical literature and historical fiction. She enjoyed travel with highlights of trips to Alaska, Hawaii and her lifelong dream of visiting Scotland and standing where Mary Queen of Scots once stood.


Mary was a passionate servant to the community. In particular, Mary helped to feed hundreds of people through her tireless work and leadership at the St. Michaels food pantry for the last decade. She worked until the day of her passing to help those in need despite her failing health.


Mary enjoyed working with children and taught Sunday school at St. Michaels. She was an avid crafter who enjoyed crocheting and painting statues as gifts for her family. Mary was adored by the community, her family, and all who met her. She left the world a better place and will be missed by all that knew her determined soul.


Friends will be received on Thursday from 5-8 P.M. at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (3219 Tremainsville @ Alexis, 419-269-1111) Services will be held on Friday at 11 A.M. at St. Michaels Lutheran Church (5790 W. Temperance Rd., Ottawa Lake, MI) where friends will be received after 10 A.M. A private burial will be held at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, Toledo.
