Mary Hernandez, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly. A woman of quiet strength and boundless love, Mary lived a life defined by the deep and lasting impact she made on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Though tiny in stature, Mary carried a heart far too big to measure that overflowed with warmth, compassion, and endless devotion. She was the kind of woman who made everyone feel welcomed and loved simply by being near her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gonzalo “Chalo” Hernandez, her daughter Christine (Bruce) Boyer, granddaughter Sylvia, her parents Laverne and Gladys Shoup, and 8 siblings as she was not only the smallest but also the youngest. Her brothers and sisters were Wayne, Virginia, Kenneth, Jeanne, Helen, David, Edna, and Carol. Mary kept their memory alive in everything she did.

Mary is survived by her loving and loyal children: John Hernandez, Gilbert (Starr) Hernandez, Julie (Mike) West, Daniel “Danny” (Erin) Hernandez, and Connie (Ed) Welch. She was the proud grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of 31, and affectionately known as Gramma, Wella or GG to the generations she served with thoughtfulness and a kind spirit.

After getting all of the kids out of the house and off to school, she started working at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in 1972, she retired in 1996.

She loved cooking for her family and having them all together almost every Sunday. She was an avid reader and always had a word search puzzle nearby.

Mary’s legacy is one of selfless love, quiet resilience, and immeasurable kindness. She was the heart of her family and a steady presence who always put others before herself. Her life was a living example of grace, service, and unwavering faith.

Our mom, Gramma, Wella, and GG will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
