John Smaltz died August 5, 2018 and is survived by his wife Zona; daughters Nancy of Ann Arbor and Virginia of Gahanna, Ohio; sons John, Jr. of Toledo and James of Cooperstown, NY; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and sister, Jean of Manhattan, KS. John was married to Zona Caughron of Dallas, TX in 1954. John grew up in Le Mars, IA graduating from Central High School in 1947 and Iowa State University in 1951. He worked for the Carnation Company in Dallas, TX after graduation and accepted a position with Owens-Illinois, Inc. in Toledo, OH in 1960. John retired in 1991 from the Forest Products Division as Manager of Administration for the Paper Mills, Woodlands Wood Products and Railroad Operations. John was an avid golfer and played in several golf leagues and was secretary for the Toledo Retiree Golf League for many years. In retirement John and his wife traveled extensively in the United States as well as Germany, Scotland and the United Kingdom. They were members of Collingwood Presbyterian Church where John served as a Deacon and Elder and volunteered for many years at the Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry. John was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Jay of Mesa, AZ. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II assigned to the Southwest Pacific Theater. He was a dedicated family man and helped all members of his family obtain College Under-Graduate and Graduate Degrees. A memorial service will be held on September 15th at 1:00 p.m. at Collingwood Presbyterian Church, 2108 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH 43620.
