John C. Culbertson

John C. Culbertson, 79, of Holland, passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday December 16, 2023 at home surrounded by family. He was born November 16, 1944 in Toledo, Ohio to Carl A. and Lila J. (Lyman) Culbertson. John was raised on a farm in Holland, Ohio where he loved to get into trouble with his life long friend Milton Grindstaff. Lila would tell stories of taking a hose to the boys outside in the winter after they had been sprayed by a skunk. In 1967 he met the love of his life, Lois A. Flynn. They knew right away that they had found their soul mates. Three months later they married and stayed happily married for 56 years. Shortly after marrying, John was drafted to Vietnam, where he served in the Army for 14 months.

John was a life long lover of animals. He and Lois ran Culbertson’s Feed on Angola road in Holland. At first the store was a feed store for all animals, it eventually became an exotic animal rescue. John and Lois rescued many exotic animals including tigers, lions, bears, and monkeys from all over the US. John could never sit still for long and was always on the go. He loved to find unique trinkets, visit antique shops, and search for his next car. Perhaps his greatest gift was his creativity and an extraordinary gift for art. He could paint anything whether on the side of a barn or a small canvas. He was not just limited to painting, but was exceptional at carving, sculpting, and crafting unique pieces.

John was a devoted father and loved his family deeply. He was always available with a loving smile and big hug for his three children John P. Culbertson, Christine (Troy) Wallace, and Jennifer (Kevin) Sancraint. He was blessed with six beautiful grandchildren; Averie, Jayce, Zackary, Hannah, Jaxon and Allyson. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother David.

He will be fondly remembered by his smile, sense of humor, and unconditional loving heart. Words cannot express how much John will be missed by all that came to know him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Toledo Zoo or the charity of your choice.
