James Edward Karns passed to his eternal reward Friday, February 21 with his wife and daughters by his side. He’d been longing to “go home” and no doubt answered the Lord’s call with a joyful heart, having lived and loved his savior Jesus Christ for most of his adult life.
Born on December 12, 1934, Jim grew up in Toledo and attended Macomber High School where he studied carpentry. He served in the army for two years before starting his own business, Jim’s Trim Shop, doing boat and car interiors. From there, he began doing furniture upholstery which led to custom built furniture and upholstery under the name Custom Interiors of Toledo. Though he closed his shop, he never retired, still working until his last days!
He married Sue Montague in 1960. They have two daughters, Julie (Terry) Creech and Diane (John) Dibert. Jim was devoted to his family. Eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren survive him.
Jim and Sue faithfully attended Holland Free Methodist Church where they were active members. Jim taught Sunday School and led a number of home Bible studies through the years. He was also instrumental in starting the Sunday morning Men’s Meeting. He was actively involved in the radio ministry of WPOS, now Proclaim FM, serving on the board for many years. Jim helped many in their walk with the Lord as a faithful teacher and friend, always seeking ways to share his faith.
The son of Roy and Elma Karns, Jim had two brothers and four sisters, His sister, Betty, survives him along with numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no service, but for those wanting to share memories with the family, please do so in notes and letters. Jim never sought fame or recognition, but these messages would provide a special legacy for his family, especially for the next generation to know who their Pops was.
