James W. Dowling

James William Dowling was born on June 20, 1947; the third of what would become a family of eight children. Jim lived in Toledo his entire life, first in the Old South End and then on to the West Side. He was inducted into the Army and served in Vietnam from April 1967 through 1968. Upon his return from the war, he worked on the railroad and then a foreman at Barrett Battery (later Varta Battery Company. In 1983 he and his wife bought and ran Custards Last Stand Restaurant in Sylvania and were the owners until selling it in 1996. Jims last occupation was delivering home health care equipment and then medications for Pro Medica Caring Services and The Pharmacy Counter. Jim married the love of his life, Suzanne Marie McIlhargey on July 10, 1976. From this union was born two wonderful sons, David and Joshua. Jim leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Sue, sons, David and Joshua (Salma) Dowling; three grandchildren, Nolan, Samuel, and Kaley and third son, Tanner: siblings, Sandra Jones, Barbara (Jeff) Rogers, Leslie (Dave) Hanna, Brad (Patti) Dowling, Beverly Dowling and Alison (John) Van Rynen, Mary Lynne (Nick) Mousoulias, Deborah Hutt, and David McIlhargey, as well as 40 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Betty Dowling, his brother, Curtis Dowling and Brother-in-law, Robert McIlhargey Jr. Jims favorite things were spending time with his grandchildren, relaxing with Sue while camping, (preferable near a lake) and playing euchre on the weekend with good friends. Deal yourself a loner, Jim!!! Memorial visitation will be Friday, June 26, 2015 from 12 (noon) until 8:00 pm at H. H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Rd (419-473-1301). Memorial services will follow at 10:30 am on Saturday in the funeral home. Contributions may be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the Toledo Area Veterans Administration, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
