Ione Stough

Ione Stough, age 95, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 26,2013 at Flower Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born Feb 27, 1918 in Fontanet, Indiana to her parents Thomas and Edna Caveney. Her father passed away at the young age of 27, with 3 small children and one on the way, so her family moved around a lot living with different family members. While Ione was living with her aunt and uncle, they found work in Toledo, so the family settled in Toledo. While Ione was a student at Libby High School where she met her future husband Leland Stough who she married in 1936 in Bowling Green, Ohio. During WW II, Ione worked at Champion Spark Plug. Ione spent her teenage years in the Reynolds Corners area and had many friends there. After her sons grew up, at the age of 47, she decided to attend nursing school. She attended Northwest Ohio School of Nursing. Ione did her clinical studies at Toledo Hospital and after passing her state boards she was employed as a nurse at Flower Hospital and later at Edgewood Nursing Home. She enjoyed her nursing career for over 20 years before retiring in 1981. Ione and her husband, Lee were instrumental in creating the 'Common Space' Senior Centre within the Old Glann School. Ione along with a group of over 65 year olds, started a dance group which they performed at U.T. and B.G. along with many churches, schools, local and county fairs. She was preceded in death in 2003 by her beloved husband of 67 years, Leland Stough, and sons, David Stough and Thomas Stough, grandson Brian Stough and step-grandson, Bryan Murphy. Ione is survived by her devoted sons, John (Susan Birkenkamp) Stough and James (Debbie) Stough, grandchildren; Vicky(Jim) Howell, Brad Stough, Tom (Jennifer) Stough, Dawn (James) Stough, Kimberly (Kevin) Konwinski, Rachel (Eric) Ables, Michelle (Frank) Ruelke, several great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, step- grandchildren, Jeff (Jennifer) Murphy and Dan (Abby) Earl, Bobby Morris, Heather Fogarty, Brian Morris, Matthew Morris, brother, Jim Bruce. Visitation for Ione will be Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at H. H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, 3219 Tremainsville Rd. (at Alexis) 419-473-1301 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Funeral service will be Thursday beginning at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Ione's name may be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E.
