Helen I. Gearig

Helen I. (Parker) Gearig passed away peacefully on July 16, 2021, at the age of 96. Helen was born on June 12, 1925, in Wauseon, Ohio to Vernon E. and Ava (Bayes) Parker the fifth of eight children. She graduated from Swanton High School in 1943. Helen married Orville Gearig in 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1998. Helen is survived by her children; Barbara Gerke of Holland Ohio, Hal Gearig of Holland, Ohio, Joel Gearig of Raleigh, NC, Scott Gearig of Maumee, Ohio and Carol (Douglas) Schleucher of Bluffton, Ohio; grandchildren Lisa (Chris) Small, Leanne (Ryan) Poling, Corey (Emily) Fountain, Alison (Eric) Kish, Kyle Schleucher, Katie (James) Perkins and Todd (Erika) Schleucher and ten great granddchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Hardt of Silver Spring, Md. and sisters-in-law Kate Parker of Delta, Ohio and Myrna VanArsdall of Parker, Co. She was preceded in death by her husband Orville; son-in-law, Leslie Gerke, Jr; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Gearig; parents; brothers, Harold A. Parker, Robert E. Parker, Joseph B Parker, Wilbur E. Parker; sisters, Harriet A. Parker, JoAnn Dowlin; sisters-in-law Charlotte Parker and Lois Parker and brother-in-law John Hardt. She was very active in the school and extracurricular activities of her five children. Helen assisted Orville in his devotion to veterans and served as State Commander of the DAV Auxiliary. Helen and Orville were avid campers and traveled all over the country. She was known as a wonderful seamstress and sewed for family, friends and strangers alike. She was also well liked for her baking and candy making talents. Helen retired from Toledo Public Schools (McKesson School) as a teachers aid. Friends and family will be received on Monday, July 19, 2021 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Walker Funeral Home, Holland-Springfield Chapel, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland, OH 43528 (419-865-8879). Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Springfield Township Cemetery.
