It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dick Varwig, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and entrepreneur, on March 4, 2025. Dick was born on January 18, 1942, in Oregon, Ohio, and dedicated his life to teaching and coaching, impacting countless lives along the way.
Dick spent the majority of his career as a teacher at Lake Jr. High School, where he coached jr. and high school sports for 27 years, including 17 years as the head coach for Varsity Girls Basketball and was subsequently inducted into the Hall of Fame. His passion for the sport, integrity, and commitment to his students were evident in every game and practice. Dick shared his love for basketball with his favorite assistant coach, his wife Clair Varwig. Together, they demonstrated an incredible partnership both on and off the court.
In addition to their partnership in coaching, Dick and Clair had a dream to own a campground. Over 50 years ago, they bought land and spent most of their lives cultivating a rich, family-oriented environment for others to have community and relaxation. It is affectionately called “Camp DiClair” as another indicator that Dick and Clair spent their life building a beautiful partnership, family, and business.
Dick leaves behind his devoted wife Clair, their three daughters Michelle (Rob) Hunter, Jaclyn (Jim) Lebert, and Andrea (Grady) Ellis, and ten grandchildren: Lauren (Jeremy), Allyson, Morgan (Cody), Maycen (Dillon), Ian, Emercyn, Graydon, Colin, Tatum, and Jake. He will be remembered for his kindness, strong work ethic, and the profound impact he had on his family, students, and community.
To honor Dick’s wishes, the family will not be offering a funeral service, but they request that you share your fondest memories of Dick on the online tribute book. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s research on behalf of his wife.
