Gordon George Carter (affectionately known as dad, grandpa, uncle, Carter, JC and Gordie), age 91, of Swanton, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, January 12, 2026. Although he often said that “my bags are packed, and I’m ready to go home,” his sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives he touched. His family and friends thought they would have a little more time with him.
Gordon was preceded in death by his son, Gary Carter; father, George Carter; mother, Elenora Carter; sister, Carol Schwartz; and three brothers, Mike Carter, Chuck Carter and Jerry Carter; as well as his close friends, Wayne Altman and Bob Dennis. They were waiting for him with smiles and open arms.
Gordon is survived and missed by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Carter, just one month shy of their 70th wedding anniversary; son, Gordon Carter; two daughters, Lisa (Carter) Heastan and Cindy (Carter) Mohrbach; daughter-in-law, Particia (Trish) (Hayward) Carter; two son-in-laws, Harvey Heastan and Randy Mohrbach; and two brothers, Randy Carter and Mark Carter.
His memory lives on and will be forever cherished and remembered by his six grandchildren; Jason Bowles, Misty (Carter) Brehm, Crystal Bowles (Storm), William (Billy) Onweller, Kylee Onweller, Ashleigh (Schuller) Marciniak; and six (soon to be 7 seven) great grandchildren; Gabe, Carter (his namesake), Dom, Callie, Liam, Layla, and baby girl Marciniak.
He also leaves many nieces and nephews, other family members, good neighbors, friends, and acquaintances who will sadly miss him. Gordon never knew a stranger.
Those who knew Gordon will remember him for his generosity to those in need or in appreciation for some kindness they gave him.
Gordon served his country in both the United States Army and United States Marines, serving on the front lines at the young age of 18 during the Korean War, and received the prestigious CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge).
As a skilled carpenter, Gordon spent over 50 years in the countertop and cabinet business. He took immense pride in his craft and was a mentor, passing on his craft to many others.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Swanton Church of the Nazarene, 315 West Airport Highway, Swanton, Ohio. His family invites all who knew him to join for a time of reminiscing, celebrating, and sharing memorable moments with Gordon Carter over the past 91½ years.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Dad’s favorite charity, St Jude.
