It is with profound sadness that George A. “Asphalt Cowboy” DeCair, Sr., age 77, peacefully passed away of natural causes Saturday September 5th, 2020 in his Holland, Ohio home. Born August 13, 1943 in Muskegon, MI George’s family relocated to Holland, Ohio where he was raised to later play football for the Springfield Blue Devils. Being a 1963 Springfield High School graduate made him the only of 9 siblings to graduate. A short 3 years later, George was also the only to survive his Air Force Battalion based in Hawaii where he loaded bombs on fighter jets. He drove millions of miles the next 22 years as a Professional Truck Driver, starting at the young age of 17. George was known as a Human GPS; he was also well known for his words of wisdom and advice, both on and off the road. He was known by many for his “tell it like it is” ways but his huge helping heart that he was sure to spread beyond his family into the community balanced that out. In 1973 George became a Springfield Township Volunteer Fireman where he spent countless hours for the next 36 years, the Longest Career Length within the District. He also was 1 of 3 generations of DeCair’s at one time. He was given an Outstanding Service Award in 2010 after years of instructing EMT Training Classes & Monday Night Trainings, from Owens Community College. He loved spending time with his STFD family; he headed Crissey Fireman’s Association Woman’s Auxiliary Field Days, played STFD softball even though he crawled through Home Base and grew to through the years as Engineer, Captain, Chief Engineer, Deputy Chief before gaining his last position as District Chief in 1998. He retired in 2009 and was recognized for his Longevity & Leadership in 2010. When George wasn’t found working, which was rarely, he enjoyed traveling, gambling, fishing, MIS races, cooking, and going to auctions because if you knew George, you knew he was a collector, of all great things; he loved giving his great-grandchildren tours through “Grandpa’s Museum”. Through all of George’s hard-working years, he gained his extended Xpress family including Special Friends Fred Velo & Sheri Poitinger of X Press Auto & Truck Services Inc. He also gained Special Friends Jeff & Loida and several LC Sherriff Deputies & OSHP in his position as General Manager for over 30 years. He leaves behind to tell his honorable stories, oldest and only surviving son, George (Tina) Jr., daughters BeLinda and Jan (Dennis) Clevenger; 9 Grandchildren, Kristie (Rodney) Lane, Brittany, Stephanie, Gregory (Amanda), Hannah, Ashley (Christopher), Jimme, Heather, and Jonah; 11 Great Grandchildren, Lela, Dylan, Jordan, Savannah, Kenlee, Jase, Mayson, Harper, Layla, Georgia and Gunner; grandson/friend, Mike Lawhorn; sister, Delores Carlston (of CA.) and is now flying high with his two youngest sons, playing poker and traveling all of the Heavens together; Mark (Holly) and Brian. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of funeral and Last Alarm services at 5:00 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, Holland-Springfield Chapel, 7438 Airport Hwy., Holland. Fireman’s procession will follow to Springfield Township Cemetery. Due to the state mandate, facial coverings and social distancing is required. Contributions in his name are suggested to the Springfield Township Fire Department.
