Gary “Grump” Tyson passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026.
Gary is survived by his loving children, son, Anthony “Tony” Tyson (Niki Tyson) and daughter, Tami Hrebic (Jason Hrebic), grandson, Gavin Hrebic, brothers, Dennis “Fin” Tyson, Chris “Ears” Tyson, and Tracy “Gut” Tyson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He is also lovingly remembered by his longtime companion Jane Shultz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Al Tyson and Virginia Zimmerman, daughter, Faith Marie Tyson, brother, Frank Tyson, and granddaughter, Jayden Hrebic.
Gary graduated from Elmwood High School in 1969, where he was an accomplished all-around athlete. He earned All-State honors as a running back and remains in the OHSAA Football State Record books for a remarkable 102-yard interception return for a touchdown against Eastwood.
Following graduation, Gary proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving four years before being honorably discharged. After his military service, he worked in a variety of construction related jobs.
A lifelong competitor, Gary continued playing men’s league sports for many years. He was a key member of the Billy & Buds Flag Football team, helping lead them to consecutive National Championships in 1985 and 1986. He also competed at a high level in slow pitch softball for many years.
Gary was also an avid outdoorsman who found great joy in fishing and hunting, especially when shared with family and friends. Known for his strong personality, sense of humor, athletic ability, and toughness, he leaves behind countless memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the Albert Bowe American Legion Post 338, 209 W. Crocker St., Bradner, Ohio 43406.
