Fr. Richard J. Saelzler

Fr. Richard J. Saelzler, age 69, died Sunday, March 25, 2018 at The Ursuline Center, Toledo. He was born June 29, 1948 in Toledo to Mr & Mrs. Paul (Martha Sypneski) Saelzler. He attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1966. He completed his seminary studies at Saint Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, and Mt. St. Marys of the West in Seminary, Cincinnati. He also earned a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Toledo. He was ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Toledo on June 5, 1976 and served as Associate Pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Lima, Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Sandusky, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Toledo and St. Wendelin Parish, Fostoria. He served as Pastor of Historic Saint Patrick Parish, Toledo, and St. Thomas More University Parish, Bowling Green, and since 2005 he had served as Chaplain to the Ursuline Convent and Ursuline Center, Toledo. Over the years, Father Saelzler also served as a faculty member at a number of diocesan Catholic High Schools, including Toledo Central Catholic, Lima Central Catholic, Fostoria Saint Wendelin, and Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic. He was granted Senior Priest Status in 2017. Survived by his brother, Ronald (Carolyn) Saelzler of Maumee; sister-in-law Linda Saelzler; nieces, Jacquelyn Saelzler and Connie (Marcos) Ferreira; nephews, matt Saelzler and Mark (Marisa) Saelzler all of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Paul. The Reception of the Body will be at 9 AM on Wednesday at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Toledo with visitation following until 11 AM when the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Daniel E. Thomas. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Toledo
