Gene Steven Fodor, age 84, of the Point/Shoreland Community, died Saturday February 17, 2018 at home. He was born November 16, 1933 to Mr. & Mrs. Julius (Margaret Tima) Fodor, who immigrated from Hungary. Gene was a proud 1st generation Hungarian-American, who was raised in the Birmingham neighborhood. He proudly served his country and was both a U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force Veteran, being deployed to Korea with both branches of the military. Gene graduated from the Toledo Police Academy in 1959 and worked in both Field Operations and the Detective Bureau, where he worked in the intelligence unit from 1965 until it was dissolved in 1977. He retired on December 31, 1987. He was a member of Riverview Yacht Club, Toledo; American Legion Post 512 and Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 40. He was active with the Birmingham Hall of Fame, where he had been inducted and currently served as Secretary. Gene graduated from Waite High School. Gene enjoyed a long and active retirement. Above all things his family was the most important thing to him. Survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver, Karen Sue Martensen; children, Eric (Becky) Fodor, DeAnna (Michael) Long and Brian (Kelly) Fodor all of Toledo; grandchildren, Joshua (Cha) Fodor, Nicole Fodor, Brandon (Jen) Burrow; great-grandchildren, Devin, Aaron, Juliana, Abby and Jacob; brothers, Robert (Karen) Fodor, Ernie (Peggy) Fodor; sisters, Margaret Ann Matyok and Judy (Braxton) Strubble, the mother of his children, Barbara J. Smith, and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood, 419-269-1111) on Friday from 2-8 PM, where the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Police will hold Services at 7 PM. Services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 AM at Calvin United Church of Christ (1946 Bakewell), where friends will be received after 10 AM. Burial, Willow Cemetery, Oregon.
