Daniel Peter Schings

September 3, 1933 — January 31, 2016

Born on Park Street, in the Polish Village, to Charles William and Frances Rita (Walinski) Schings, Daniel Peter Schings WON his battle with Alzheimer's Disease and was lifted by angels to eternal life on Sunday, January 31, 2016. Daniel graduated from Blessed Sacrament School in Toledo, and after a year at Central Catholic High School, he completed his education at Macomber High School where he made life long friendships with Donald Morford, Jerry Gerity, and Daniel Michalski. After high school, he attended The University of Toledo for a period of time before entering the Army. Daniel served at a missile base under Lt Colonel James Jimison, also from Toledo. James became a dear friend who remained in contact until his death. Daniel enrolled in Accounting courses while in the Army and upon discharge became an accountant. He kept books for small businesses and did taxes, in many cases, for three generations of families. At the age of 29, he became the owner of Rack and Cue Billiards on Sylvania Avenue. A short time later, Daniel and Bill Feltman purchased the A & W Restaurant on the corner of Secor and Sylvania, eventually he became sole owner. Many family memories were created here as he operated the restaurant with his wife, mother and children. Daniel also owned Mama Rosa's Pizza business, which delivered frozen pizzas and sandwiches to various bars in the Toledo area. Dan was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish for most of his life. After moving to a retirement village in south Toledo in 2000, Dan and Rose became members of Little Flower Parish. Dan was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions. He spent countless hours enjoying golfing with many friends, his brother, and his sons. Dan and Rose owned cottages at Barton Lake and Lake Diane where they spent many years relaxing and creating lifelong memories. Dan met his wife, the love of his life, Rose Helen (O'Donnell) the week he was discharged from the Army. On April 26, 1958, Dan and Rose married at Rosary Cathedral. They are the proud parents of Mary Kathryn (Robert) Smith, Michael William (Paula) Schings, Jennifer Joan (Gregory) Tillman, Martha Ann (Andrew) Minnich, and Thomas Charles (Alexandria) Schings. They delighted in being the grandparents of 14 grandchildren, Stephanie (Shawn) Gorny, Katie Schings, Zachary (Jacqueline) Smith, Emily (Kevin) Brecht, Brittany Schings, Michael Schings, Tyler Schings, Daniel Smith, Samantha Minnich, Parker Schings, Joshua (fiance, Abigail) Tillman, Garrett Minnich, Megan Tillman, and Andrew 'Drew' Minnich. Dan and Rose also cherished being great-grandparents to Hannah, Sarah, Emma, Leah, Addison, Mayah, Jonas, Maci, Tessa and Chloe. Daniel was also overjoyed to be the adoptive owner to Phineus 'Finny' the Dog. Dan is survived by his sister, Elaine (Ron) Guntsch and their three children, Brenda (Chris) Barrett and their three sons, Linda (Andrew, deceased) Glover and son, Doug Guntsch and his two daughters; brother, Robert (Linda) Schings and his former sister-in-law, Ann (Murray) Schings, and their three daughters, Angela (Doug) Olesen and their four sons, Nancy (Peter) Arquette and their three sons, and Heather (Jason) Adams. Alzheimer's was something Daniel faced, but through the Alzheimer's Assocation we believe a cure will be found and the disease will not be his legacy. The family would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their invaluable care of Daniel, ensuring his comfort and accomodating his loved ones while we lovingly prayed him into King Jesus' arms. Friends will be received at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home (1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood, 419-261-1111) on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Little Flower Church at 11:00 a.m. with the family and friends gathering in the Narthex prior to the Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. funeral mass Thursday, February 4, 2016 Little Flower Catholic Church 5522 Dorr Toledo OH United States
