In Loving Memory of Clair Jeanne (Davenport) Varwig (9/9/46-6/21/25)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Clair Jeanne Varwig, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who spent her career as a gifted teacher and coach.
Clair was married to her loving husband Dick for 57 years. They taught at the same school, coached basketball together, and were business partners for 50+ years at their family-oriented campground that is affectionately named “Camp Diclair.” She was a wonderful mom to three daughters. The only thing she may have loved more than her husband and children were her ten grandchildren. Clair was known for spoiling her grandchildren with constant “love gifts,” as well as candy and dessert at all times of day. In her free time, she loved playing tennis and singing in the choir.
Throughout Clair’s 15-year battle with Alzheimer’s, Dick and Clair’s love for each other never died. When they saw each other, their faces would light up. Each day, Dick would bring donuts and coffee to the wonderful Brookdale Clare Bridge Memory Center where she lived in her final years. They would sit and talk while enjoying their treat. As Clair’s disease progressed, Dick would still bring donuts. She would get a big smile on her face and say “that’s my man!” They would hug, hold hands, and she would fall asleep in his arms watching game shows. Even as her memory failed her, the safety and love they found in each other’s arms never did. This love was visible to everyone who saw them until the day Dick unexpectedly died, March 4, 2025. As they were soulmates, it wasn’t surprising to anyone that they were reunited in heaven three months after his death. While her departure will forever leave a void in the hearts of her family, they have found peace and comfort knowing that Dick and Clair are together for eternity.
In addition to Clair’s three daughters Michelle (Rob) Hunter, Jaclyn Lebert, and Andrea (Grady) Ellis, she leaves ten grandchildren: Lauren (Jeremy), Allyson, Morgan (Cody), Maycen (Dillon), Ian, Emercyn, Graydon, Colin, Tatum, and Jake, three great-grandchildren, and five siblings (her sister, Kathy Rusk, was also her best friend).
To honor Clair’s wishes, the family will not be offering a funeral service but instead request that you hug your loved ones and never miss an opportunity to remind them how much they are loved.
