Bernice R. Greene

July 6, 1922 — March 17, 2021

Bernice Greene, 98, of Haskins, Ohio passed away in comfort and peace on March 17, 2021. Bunny’s greatest legacy is that she’ll be remembered as a pioneer of modern women. She overcame hardships in life to become a single mother to her children when she had few job skills to support her family. She held the responsibility on her shoulders with strength, and taught her children independence, instilled in them a strong moral compass and exemplified a woman of integrity and love. She’ll be greatly missed. May she rest in Peace. Bunny was born in Twin Falls, Idaho to Ivan and Lillian (McCumber) Albin. Her father was a telegraph operator for the railroad and moved his family to Pleasant Valley, OR along the Oregon Trail in her early years. She recalled playing in the ruts of the trail as a child. For her school years, the family moved east to her grandfather’s farm in Defiance, Ohio, then to their own farm in Delta. She remembered those years as some of the best in her life, mostly because she finally had other children to play with. She was working at a diner when she heard the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor, then worked in a wire factory during the war. A move to Peoria, IL led her to work at the Caterpillar plant where she met and married Rex Greene in 1945. They had three children, daughter Cheryl, and sons Brian and Stacey before divorcing in 1966. Bunny moved with her children to Toledo where she took college courses for her new job at the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority, where she enjoyed placing families in homes, and working as an office manager for over 20 years. After retiring she enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Embracing new experiences such as a cruise to Alaska, a railroad tour to northern Canada, vacations to Universal Studios in California, DisneyWorld in Florida with her grandchildren, traveling with friends to Branson, as well as to Switzerland, with countless day trips and drives throughout the years. She was always eager to see new places and meet new people. She moved to Haskins in 2003 and took great pleasure in making new friends and neighbors while spending sunny afternoons rocking on her front porch with her cat, and always ready with a smile and a wave for a passing friend. She lived independently there into her 99th year. For all that she was enthusiastic to have these new experiences, her first priority and joy was always for her children and family. She continued to celebrate life with her three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephew. With lovely memories, she’s survived by her sons, Brian and Stacey (Joyce); son-in-law, Guy Sutherland; her grandchildren, Aaron Sutherland, Nicole (Joe) Mettler, and Kyle (Elayna) Greene; along with her great grandchildren, Elayna, Lillian and Samuel Mettler, and Liam Greene. Her daughter Cheryl preceded her in death.
